How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe
Published 26 April
It’s that time of year where the quick shift in temperature makes us rethink what we’ll be wearing for the cooler seasons ahead.

Nobody wants a cluttered wardrobe where you stand there for what feels like millennia trying to decide what to wear. This is where concept of a capsule wardrobes comes into play.

A capsule wardrobe is a curated selection of clothes, which you can mix and match to create many outfits. Instead of a wardrobe jam-packed with uncoordinated items, the pieces in your wardrobe work together and complement each other—making choosing your daily outfits as easy as choosing your daily breakfast.

Interested in how to create a capsule wardrobe for yourself? Read on as we explain how.

1. Select your colour palette
Before putting together your capsule wardrobe, start by choosing a colour palette to guide your selections. You’ll want to pick colours you feel comfortable in, which also work together as a group.

Our top tip? Choose neutral tones for your main pieces such as pants and jackets, then use accessories to add in some bright accent colours.

We’re loving the colours in store now at Cotton On and Sussan — so if you’re looking for some colour inspiration, be sure to visit the centre.

2. Choose your basic tops
The key to a capsule wardrobe is a selection of quality basic items that are easy to wear with a bunch of outfits. You’ll want a range of tops to see you through every occasion—from work, through to casual catch ups and nights out for dinner.

A great place to start is with a simple white T-shirt. Tees can be styled in so many different ways—you could dress it up for a night out or pair it with sneakers to keep it casual.

If you’re looking for quality basic t-shirts, we recommend taking a look at City Beach and Big W

3. Find your fit in denim
There’s no denying that a good pair of jeans is an essential for every capsule wardrobe. No matter how the seasons change, denim is a year-round necessity.

This season, there are so many fresh styles to try—from straight-leg and wide-leg, through to the girlfriend cut, slim-cut, tapered, relaxed, Mom-fit, and more.

Spend time trying on lots of jeans to find the style best suited to your shape. If you need a hand, the team at Ally Fashion or Cotton On can help you to find the perfect fit.

4. Select your jackets
As the weather gets colder, jackets and coats become even more important parts of your wardrobe! To ensure you’re prepared for everything this season throws at you, arm your wardrobe with three jackets—a casual jacket, a puffer jacket and a coat to keep you cosy and warm.

Pick a casual jacket that matches your personal style—for example, you could try a bomber jacket from Supre or a denim jacket Dotti. You’ll find some great puffer jacket options at Rebel, and coats for yourself and the whole family at Kmart.
